Small and lightweight, the Suunto X10M wrist-top computer watch
combines an altimeter, barometer, compass, and GPS navigator,
making it a terrific companion for outdoor enthusiasts of all
stripes. The X10M--which builds on Suunto's decade of experience in

wrist-top computers thanks to its improved, faster GPS fixes. Even
under heavy foliage, you can use the X10M to plot your treks,
navigate to a certain spot, or get back to your car, all while
keeping your hands free to hold a hiking stick or water bottle.
Once back at home, you can share your treks on Google Earth, or use
the Suunto Trek Manager PC software to create new routes and plan
new journeys.
The X10M's barometer, meanwhile, measures and records air pressure
to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to
hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide
whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies
look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In
general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure
brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and
notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea
to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you're on a climb, it
would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the
X10M's barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and
nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.
The Suunto X10M also includes a built-in altimeter, which displays your current altitude and your vertical ascent and descent rate. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the X10M can help you stay on course. And, of course, the X10M captures all your altitude information in its integrated logbook, making it easy to analyze your performance when creating a training routine.

And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering
enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a
problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack
of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive
turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for
a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of
accuracy.
By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.
In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Overall, this watch is great. I've used it snow shoe camping,
mountaineering, hiking, running, biking and bragging! ;)
Cons:
The GPS can take upwards of 5+ minutes to "Lock On" to the satellites. I usually put it on the "1 second fix" setting before turning on the GPS, then once it's locked on change it back to "1 minute fix" or "manual" depending on my activity. Once it's obtained an initial lock, subsequent locks seem to be faster.
Battery life on the 1 second fix setting is low, 6 hrs, just as advertised. But for most of my activities, the 1 minute or manual fix options provide plenty of battery life.
The watch offers a lot of features and as such there's a learning curve. Expect to spend a few hours playing with it.
The user manual could use some work...
The watch is not compatible with the mac version of TOPO!
You can't pull your track log directly from TOPO! (pc version). You have to pull the log using Trek Manager, export to a txt file, then import into TOPO!. This probably isn't the watches fault but instead TOPO!s.

The navigation function for following pre-set routes and finding waypoints is great. Even better is the track back feature. It also provides quite a few in-flight statistics that are often helpful in estimating arrival time, duration, course error, etc.
I really like the sun rise, sun set feature. I wish this feature had an alarm, but since the watch has 3 alarm settings it's not too hard to manually set sun rise/set alarms. I wish it had tide and moon rise/set info as well.
The altimeter/barometer/temp work well, though i'm not a heavy user of these features but they serve my purposes fine.
Summary:
I really like this watch. But keep in mind it's a watch and cannot be expected to outperform handheld units. For me, using this in conjunction with a map & compass has worked out great as it helps provide that sanity check on position. I feel confident enough with this watch that I could navigate in a blizzard and make it back again. In fact, I did just that last week.

I have been researching this watch since the X9i(first model) . I
guess I expected too much. The first watch that I had was sent back
because the barometer went out as well as the face steaming up. All
I exposed it to was a car wash and normal shower. Not what I
expected for $400+ watch. Sent it back and got another one. Within
a week the coating used on the black part of face is flaking off. I
looked at every review and still ordered the watch. I love the look
of the watch and make no mistake it is very cool. I wanted it to
wear everyday because of the large face and it looks cool. I would
just like to caution everyone else. It is not very durable, and
this was a lot of money for me. I really thought because of the
high price and the rugged look, I would not have to worry about it.
That is not the case. I find myself constantly checking it after it
gets wet to make sure it is not fogged up. I like the watch it just
lacks some durability issues for everyday wear. If you are a gadget
guy or girl you will like the watch, just be aware that it is not a
timex and does not handle be bumped and beat around very well. I
also forsee some issues with the seals, they do not fit well. If
you are even remotely hard on watches, I would not purchase this
watch if you are looking for an everyday watch. Hope this helps
someone else.

My 1st watch fogged up, my second one fell apart and the third one is being sent back in the morning, because the bezel keeps popping off. If you buy it from an authorized dealer you can keep sending them back (at least for 2 years) but what happens after that? Do not buy this watch. I went through these reviews and saw the same type of reviews as the one I am typing. I over looked them because I loved the watch and thought that won't happen to me they must have got a bad one or they are just picky. Trust me I am just an average Joe and this thing breaks like crazy! Beware!

Operationally a good product. I rate it low because a $400-$500
watch should not have the craftsmanship problems this has. Both my
son and I have one, and we both have had the same problems.
It's all about the glue used to hold the top cover. It's terrible. Our covers came off after 2 months of normal day to day wear. I sent mine back and Suunto repaired it, no charge. But they obviously used the same substandard adhesive because the cover popped off one month later. Just 2 days ago one of the rubber caps that cover one of the functions button came off too, because of that crappy adhesive. Instead of sending it back I re-glued it with Gorilla Glue, which should hold.
Suunto replaced my son's watch, as both the top cover and most of the rubber button caps came off completely.
Though I like the watch, I absolutely cannot recommend it. By the way, a guy I work with has the same model and his top cover came off too.
Suunto, please fix this problem. I wouldn't pay $50 for this product.

This watch was a great purchase for the first few weeks that I had
it; as far as functionality it has performed superbly. A few weeks
after I purchased this watch (the X10 Military) I deployed to Iraq
and planned on using this watch with my work in the Army here.
The watch has continued to serve fairly well, until I had about 2 months in country. The bezel/upper-case (a flexible rubber ring) is only attached by two rubber flanges that fit into the hard plastic body of the watch. First (at about 60 days) one of the flanges failed, then in another 30 days, the second flange failed. I have been able to superglue the bezel back onto the case (and probably voided the warranty, but I can't wait months to get this back and forth) but I am very dissapointed that a watch that cost me $500.00 USD and is listed as a "military" model, cannot handle exposure to the elements on my wrist for less than 3 months.
I think the concept and design of this watch is great, but I hope that Suunto is able to better incorporate some "painful" product testing before you market something to the military who will depend on it.

This purchase has been a nightmare. I purchased from DataVision
Computer Video Inc through Amazon a $399.99 a Suunto X10 Military
GPS watch. My wife received this product and did not open it before
sending it to me. I am in Iraq and was looking forward to getting
my new watch. Unfortunately when I received it it did not work at
all the watch would not turn on at all even after being charged. I
called DataVision Computer Video Inc the seller. I informed them
that I had registered the product with Sunnto and that I could not
send it back as I am at a remote site in Iraq and I cannot insure
anything going through the mail. They promptly told me to contact
Sunnto which I told them I already had and Sunnto said the symptoms
the watch displayed required it to be replaced and to contact the
seller. I asked DataVision Computer Video Inc to annotate in their
records that it would be October to November time frame before I
could send it back since I will be back in the States on leave.
They told me since it would be so long to send it back to Sunnto
myself since that was all they would do anyway and I have a year to
take care of it from date of purchase. I thought DataVision
Computer Video Inc would handle this issue like replacing the watch
since they are the seller but I guess I was wrong. I'll deal with
it when I'm home on leave it's not like I don't have better things
to do with that time. Needless to say I will not be buying anything
from Amazon or Data Vision in the future. This is a $400.00 fiasco
that even if resolved while I'm on leave does not guarantee that I
will have a watch in hand before I return to Iraq and that the new
one I get won't have the same or other problems.

I have just requested a return for refund after receiving my second
X10. I am very unhappy with Suunto on this item because they
usually put out high quality products. The first watch I had,
started to fall apart the second time out on a kiteboard trip. The
plastic cover over the glass started to fall off and it wouldn't
stay on. It also lost the GPS signal 3-4 times while I was on the
water with no clouds or obstructions. I returned that one and just
got my second one last week. The cover is falling off from this one
as well, along with the clear plastic coating is starting to peel
off.

I used this watch for 2 weeks in the outback. It was charged in the
U.S. before the trip. Battery lasted for all two weeks on full
charge, even though I kept playing with it and trying out most of
the settings in Australia. Got signal even under trees, of course,
no dense jungles in the outback. Temperature ranged from 35C (120F)
daytime to 8C (44F) nighttime.
At home, in the temperate U.S. zone, did I not get any signal in my office building (30 ft from nearest windows, two stories below top of building. At my apt, did not get all the satellites since I faced only northeast direction. Close to the window, however, the watch received about 6 or so.
Had fun using the watch for those two weeks, but it's so obviously built for men (non-flexible portion of watch measures 2.5") that I'll probably never use it again unless in the wilderness.

I bought this in Nov 2008, and had to send it back in Feb 2009
because the rubber buttons fell off. Turnaround was very quick and
efficient, I must admit.
HOWEVER! Today the faceplate popped off, exposing the GPS aerial! I have asked Suunto for a refund, but God only knows how successful that will be.
I would rate this product as zero stars if that were possible. I heard Suunto has a good reputation. Maybe their other watches are great, but I can only speak for this one, and it's rubbish.

I have recently ordered this watch after great reviews from
friends. The watch does have a few flaws, such as the front cover
plate falling off after a few months use, but if you go to the
Suunto forums, there is a fix for this, I used it and have had no
problems.
I have been using the GPS in MGRS mode and have had better than expected results. The track log is very accurate and downloads easily to Google Maps, which is great for archiving your movements. For the size of the GPS it is extremely accurate. I would never use this to call for fire, but definitely a great backup for hiking, emergency's or just verifying distance.

I Needed a precision GPs, easy to use and thought this would be the
one.
then I tested it again my Garmin Zümo 550 and the Forerunner 305 and the Suunto was the least precise one. If you need it for keep tracking of your path and precision is not necessary, it is a nice gadget. I am sure new models should improve accuracy.
