Amazon.com Product Description

Created with health and the environment in mind, these eco-friendly, high-quality stainless steel Klean Kanteen water bottles offer a great alternative to plastic and lined metal containers. Klean Kanteen bottles are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content, an excellent resistance to staining and rust, and will keep your beverages fresh, and sanitary. These reusable bottles are lightweight, easy to clean, durable, and will not react with acidic beverages. The single walled containers can be placed on an open flame or heating surface, but are not recommended as containers for boiling hot liquids as the Kanteen has limited insulating properties.

Durable, sanitary, and non-reactive stainless steel is the material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. The sanitary grade 304 stainless steel used in Klean Kanteen bottles also has a low nickel content, further reducing exposure to potentially irritating substances. Easy to clean, the Klean Kanteen water bottles can be put in the dishwasher, or washed by hand with a brush and mild soap.

Klean Kanteens come in sizes to meet the needs of the entire family. The 12 and 18-ounce containers are designed specifically for kids. In bottles designed for small hands, the 12 and 18 ounce bottles are available with sippy cup lid adapters along with the other sports cap options, and weigh just 6 and 8 ounces respectively. Adult sized 27 and 40 ounce Kanteens weigh just 8 and 11 ounces respectively, and are available with a choice polypropylene or steel caps. The openings are large enough to fit ice cubes, and the slim bottle design fits in most cup and bottle holders.

Klean Kanteen water bottles are available with a variety of sports caps made with non-leaching polypropylene #5 or stainless steel. The sport, flat, and loop caps are interchangeable and fit all 12-, 18-, 27-, and 40-ounce stainless steel bottles securely. The Poly Sports Cap has a push release valve allowing you to drink on the go. The Flat Caps, available in polypropylene or stainless steel twist on and off securely. The Loop Caps, available in polypropylene or stainless steel, twist on and off securely, and have a top loop for easy attachment. The polypropylene #5 caps have no known leaching characteristics, and are softer on the teeth and easy to drink from. However, if you would rather avoid plastic altogether, the stainless steel caps are a great option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory.

Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame.

Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?
We do not recommend it and it will void the one-year warranty against manufacturer defects.

Can I put my Kanteen on a stove?
In a pinch, the Kanteen can be placed on fire or a stove. Beware not to melt the plastic lid or burn yourself.

What is stainless steel?
Stainless steel is an iron-containing alloy made from some of the basic elements found on earth: iron ore, chromium, silicon, nickel, carbon, nitrogen, and manganese. Properties of the final alloy are tailored by varying amounts of these elements. There are more than 57 stainless steels recognized as standard alloys on the market. Klean Kanteens are constructed from high quality sanitary grade 304 stainless steel which has a low nickel content. Stainless steel has excellent resistance to stain or rust due to its chromium content making it a material of choice among the food processing, dairy and brewery industries. Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert and sanitary.

5 out of 5 stars Klean Kanteen water bottles are the Best!
552 people found this review helpful.
I have owned 3 KK bottles for over a year now and love them. They all have the loop ss cap and have never leaked. They clean easily, are lightweight, and the water tastes great. They have been dropped several times, and are fine even though they have dents. I would reccommend these water bottles to anyone!

I'm about to purchase a KK sippee for my baby. After reading the review from the person comparing to Sigg, I decided to research the Sigg. After searching for over 15 minutes on the sigg.com website, I could not find any information on the composition of their aluminum bottle liner. I then queried the web and found the USA Sigg website (mysigg.com/faq) and this is what i found regarding the liner composition:

"The ingredients (like the formula for Coca-Cola) remain secret and unavailable to 3rd parties so as to ensure SIGG retains its competitive advantage. The key of course is that the SIGG liner is FDA approved and independently tested to be taste and scent inert - and resistant to any leaching (0.0%) so 100% safe."

I, personally, do not take corporations 'word for it' that something is safe, and by no means do I trust the FDA's standards. Saying something is secret definitely does not increase my trust. I am a hydrogeologist and have spent hundreds of hours testing water and reviewing lab reports. Simply stating that there is no leaching does not mean much to me. For ex, under what conditions were the bottles tested? -- Sitting in a hot car for hours, sitting in the sun, carried in a pack for hours, etc. These are real conditions for water bottle usage. In addition, why is there not a link to the lab reports showing what was tested for, when, and by whom? I would think this important information would be listed on their flashy website.

I am not associated whatsoever with Klean Kanteen or anyone else, simply a crazy researcher/mom trying to find information. I decided the Klean Kanteens are still the best choice - no mystery in stainless steel construction. According to KK website, "Stainless steel is easy to clean, durable, inert, sanitary, toxin-free, and non-leaching."

Lastly, the designs are not fancy on the KK, however their is no paint to peel (this happens on the siggs) which would be a hazard for my baby who puts everything in his mouth.

Consumer awareness is what pushes corporations into publishing important health information, such as materials & chemicals used (liner composition) and lab reports veryifying that something is indeed 'safe' and has been tested adequately.

Don't let my opinion convince you, you be the judge...

5 out of 5 stars Good bye polycarbonate!

I purchased one of these for myself after researching the problems with polycarbonate bottles. At the same time I bought SIGG bottles for my kids because they had cool designs on them. Both brands of bottles are great and much safer than the polycarbonates. I like the Klean Kanteen much better than the SIGG for the simple reason that I can put standard ice cubes in it. I have yet to find an ice cube tray that is easy to use that will fit the smaller mouth of the SIGG.

With the Klean Kanteen I get clean water and no taste of metal or plastic or anything other than water. I fill this 27 ounce bottle 3 times during the day to make sure I get enough water. I like the sports cap, because I don't have to take off a cap and lay it down somewhere. I originally bought the bottle with a poly loop cap, but when I am teaching there is never a germ-free spot to set that lid down. So I bought a sport cap, and it is very easy to drink from.

If you buy the 27 ounce Klean Kanteen and like your water cold, I recommend a Built NY 20 oz bottle tote to use with it. The metal becomes VERY cold with ice in the water and with the bottle tote, it stays cold and your hands don't!

2 out of 5 stars Kleen Kanteen bottles are a great idea only approximately realized.
987 people found this review helpful.
We have both Kleen Kanteen and Sigg water bottles. My husband is an avid backpacker and hiker so we have done lots of research on water bottles and water purifiers. Also, after learning how polycarbonate plastics/Lexan (ex. Avent Bottles, Nalgene Bottles) leach Bisphenol-A into liquids we searched for the healthiest bottles on the market. After much research Sigg and Kleen Kanteen bottles seemed to be the best choice.

After owning both for over 2 years I can easily say Sigg is better than Kleen Kanteen on almost every feature I can think of to compare.

1. Sigg bottles are designed and manufactured with a significantly higher level of quality assurance than Klean Kanteen bottles. For example, the tops on the Sigg bottles have fine precision threading for a very secure and tight fit to the bottle. In stark contrast, Kleen Kanteen bottles have loosely fitting tops and their threading on the bottles usually doesn't match well to the bottle's threading. Also, the o-ring on the KK's tops can't always compensate for the looseness which can allow the KK bottles to leak quite a lot. KK's metal tops fit better than the plastic tops (sport tops).
2. Sigg preserves the taste of the water better than KK. The water from the Sigg bottles even after sitting outside of the refrigerator for a day still tastes pure. KK adds a slight metallic taste to water. KK's stainless steel is very good but Sigg's enamel coated aluminum is definitely better.
3. Both bottles seem to do a great job preventing leaching into a beverage as they both use non leaching polypropylene #5 plastic, but because KK gives water a slight metallic taste I think Sigg is slightly better than KK on this point too.
4. Sigg Kidds bottles have a better top cap to protect the drinking area from dirt and foreign matter.
5. Both Sigg and KK bottles get hot or cold depending upon the temperature of the beverage put into the bottle, thus the need for neoprene covers for both brands.
6. Both brands dent more easily than I want them to. On this point I think KK wins. The Sigg bottles dent slightly easier than KK bottles.
7. I think that KK bottles are slightly easier to clean because they have a wider mouth than the Sigg bottles. Both brands are easy to clean.
8. My son can drink just as well from both the Sigg bottles and the KK bottles.
9. Both bottle brands are light; Sigg is slightly lighter but not enough to mean much.
10. My son prefers the kid style graphics on the Sigg bottles; however the KK bottles have no paint on them to scratch.
11. Both Kleen Kanteen and Sigg water bottles cost too much.
12. We did get one large bottle that got light rust on the outside of the bottle. We threw that one away. The other bottles are ok.

From my experience Sigg bottles are a great idea precisely realized and Kleen Kanteen bottles are a great idea only approximately realized. If KK can improve their tops treading to match the bottles as well the Sigg bottles KK would be worthy of the high cost. For now, we are only buying Sigg bottles.

3 out of 5 stars Yes it's safe, but I simply cannot get rid of the metal taste with water
63 people found this review helpful.
The Klean Kanteens are likely the safest reusable drinking container in the US right now. The plastic containers containing BPA have been found to be unsafe and there are some concerns about Klean's major competitor, Swiss based Sigg, which uses an unknown patented liner of some kind inside their aluminum bottles.

The issues with the Siggs are twofold. One, we don't know what the liner is. The Sigg company won't say what it is, although they insist it's completely safe. Two, if the liner fails (which Sigg insists it won't do) you've exposed your drink to aluminum which many folks have legitimate health concerns about.

Speaking of concerns, the BPA containing plastic is NOT what is used in the Kantean lids. The idea that the plastic lids (which would have only very minimal contact with the contents - if the bottle is laid on its side for example) is somehow dangerous is only theoretical at best. Likewise, the same for the Sigg bottle lining. Both, neither or one could be completely safe. We do know that the BPA plastic is dangerous and neither bottle contains that.

Unlike some other buyers, I have had zero problem with leakage. I've also found the somewhat wider mouth to be extremely practical for using ice, drinking, and washing.

However . . . I have owned my 27 oz. Klean Kanteens for a few weeks now. I washed and rinsed them (probably six times) before I ever drank from them. The water I tested tasted and smelled like metal.

I have since washed one of my Kanteens multiple times with boiling water (the stainless steel conducts heat so you have to be careful doing this) and cold water, and none of it makes a difference. I continue to smell metal and I taste metal when I drink water. I don't think this is dangerous in any way, but it is annoying and it severely limits my use of the bottles. I've found that I can only use my bottle for flavored drinks.

My sense of taste and smell is generally pretty strong so I suspect each person will experience something different. Other reviewers have said they can't taste a thing or they got used to the flavor and don't even notice it anymore. After reading reviews all over the net, however, it's a fact that there are many of us who simply can't ignore the taste and smell.

So what to do? Me, I'll keep the Kanteens for flavored drinks, but I'm going to go out and get a Sigg for water. There's no other choice at this time.

If you have a strong sense of taste/smell you might have a problem with Klean Kanteens. Don't make the same mistake I did by ordering a bunch of these without first knowing if you'll have an issue. I strongly recommend you purchase only one bottle at first to see if you'll have a problem. If you can't taste anything then you've found the perfect water bottle.

5 out of 5 stars Rugged and well-thought out
47 people found this review helpful.
I have been after the perfect water bottle for years and this is the closest I've found. What I like:
*It's metal, not plastic. If needed you could cook in it--say if you needed to melt snow for water.
*It's stainless steel, not aluminium. I have a collection of Sigg and Brunton bottles made out of thinner aluminium that are significantly crushed in places, most often the bottom vertical edge which is at a right angle. The dings occured even inside neoprene protective sheaths. The bottom vertical edge of the clean canteen is rounded and so better resist dings. I've used a Klean Kanteen without a neoprene sheath twice as long as the aluminium ones without significant damage. I should say that I don't consider that the treatment they have received was particularly rough. It's just that in hiking and working out, bottles fall on occasion.
*The mouth of the bottle is wide enough to fit ice cubes. With the Sigg and Brunton bottles, you either wait for the ice cube to melt and slide through or buy special ice cube trays. The wide mouth also means it's easier to clean.
*The simple top and protective cap. On the Sigg, I've had one top completely crushed. The other is difficult to open since you have to twist and pull the tiny cap. I say tiny because I have large hands.

What I don't like is that it does whistle (whine?) when you drink. Placing your finger over the check valve ends the problem, but I would take off a half a star if I could because of this one aspect.

Finally, I would suggest the Built NY 20 oz. neoprene cover. It fits perfectly and looks slick.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product

I just purchased the 40 oz. size. The cap fits well and seals well. The company told me that all the different sizes use the same cap now, so there is no fit problem. The bottle is well finished and strong. Easy to drink from. It is wonderful to be using stainless steel now, and no longer be using Nalgene, which is polycarbonate plastic, and a possible health hazard
(bisphenol A).

1 out of 5 stars Decrease in Price AND Quality
32 people found this review helpful.
I purchased two of these bottles in May of 2008 with the stainless steel caps. We were very pleased with them and in August I purchased another. Although the third bottle was more than 20% less than when I made the first order, the quality of the bottle has degraded by at least 50%.

It was immediately obvious upon opening the package that this was a much cheaper steel. It is thin, light-colored and rough. The inside of the older version is polished and smooth while this one is dull and hard to clean. My husband convinced me it was still good or else I would have returned it on the spot.

We've had it now for 4 months, compared with the 7 months of the first two. All get the same general treatment and this last one is MUCH worse off. The plastic on the top of the cap is cut up and gouged and cuts into your hand every time you have to open it. More importantly, the steel is dented all over and is beginning to rust. There are dents along the bottom edge as well which make the bottle wobbly and unstable. This has not been through any use to cause such damage. The older bottles, with the thicker, higher quality steel, are holding up nicely and look as new as the day we bought them.

I feel duped by a company that drew me in with a nice quality product and then lowered their standards. I will never buy anything from Klean Kanteen again. The $5 decrease in cost does not make up for the fact that I am throwing this bottle away 4 months after purchasing it.

5 out of 5 stars Great water bottle
31 people found this review helpful.
After going through about 1 standard water bottle a day I decided I needed to follow the 1st and most importaint R of the 3, Reduce.

After extensiveley searching for a nice glass water bottle with no avail I decided to try reusing glass beverage bottles, only to find the cap started rusting after about a week of use. Having quite a delemma I decided to look into metal water bottles, trying to avoid any sort of plastic. Many friends have told me I'm crazy, but I can most definitely taste the plastic leeched into the water from plastic bottlees.

After doing a bit of research and finding that stainless steel is the best material to go with I found the Klean Kanteen here on Amazon, and decided to go with it. I'm very glad I did, the Klean Kanteen is a superb product.

The Klean Kanteen is very durable, "Klean" i.e. leeches no particles into the water (I have very keen taste), comfortable to hold, packs away well into bookbags and the such, and it looks sharp. A great bottle all around.

While I do agree with the other reviewer that it would be much better if the bottle came with the stainless steel cap. It's still a great bottle, and the plastic cap works just fine. Worrying about plastic on the 1" diameter cap at the top of the bottle is just a bit silly in my opinion.

One thing I was wondering when I was buying was what are the exact dimensions? Amazon doesn't include them so here they are: 10.5" tall with cap, 2.75" diameter base.

1 out of 5 stars What happened to the stainless steel caps?
194 people found this review helpful.
I just received my Klean Kanteen - probably the 15th I have purchased. I own a couple, and have given many as gifts. But alas, the company has done a bait & switch with the caps. What happened to the stainless steel caps??? They used to come standard. The whole idea was to have the internal part of the screw top to be steel, like the inside of the bottle - so there's no plastic touching your liquid. The exterior grip on the lid was always plastic - that's fine. But now, you have to buy the original stainless screw cap, as an accessory, that costs more than 1/3 as much as the entire bottle product. This bottle if great, but now go buy the staibless steel cap for $5.45.
Shame on you Klean Kanteen.

1 out of 5 stars What a big disappointment!
26 people found this review helpful.
I bought 2 of these bottles thinking I found the best idea for a water bottle...no more plastic. What a disappointment, the water tastes and smells like coins. When I received them I washed both of these bottles in hot soapy water and rinsed them well. The water still tasted and smelled like metal. I bought a bottle brush, washed them thoroughly again in hot soapy water and rinsed them well, they were the same. I tried washing and rinsing with white vinegar, no help. I tried washing with baking soda and rinsing well, no help. I contacted Klean Kanteen with my complaint and they are giving me a return authorization to return them for a refund. I'll post more when I find out how their customer service is.
