Product Description
Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still. When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world...and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Cassandra Clare, Author of Clockwork Angel

Q: How does your new series, The Infernal Devices, relate to your previous series, The Mortal Instruments? Do new readers need to read The Mortal Instruments before they read the new series?A: The Infernal Devices take place in the same universe as The Mortal Instruments, but a hundred and fifty years before the events of the Mortal series. You absolutely don't have to read The Mortal Instruments first; I've gotten very enthusiastic feedback from people who started with Clockwork Angel. However, if you are a fan of the Mortal Instruments, you'll see familiar family names--Lightwood, Wayland--and get to see what the ancestors of the characters you already know were up to in the Victorian age. There is at least one character who crosses over both series: the immortal warlock Magnus Bane. For those familiar with the Mortal books, it should be fun to meet him again; for those who haven't read them, it should be fun to meet him for the first time!Q: Do you have a favorite character in Clockwork Angel? A: Like Tessa, I'm torn between Jem and Will! They were both so wonderfully fun to write. Despite having a close brotherly bond, they're really opposites in personality. Will is a character who hides almost everything about himself; Jem is a character who is almost unendingly open and kind. Of course, when either kind of character reaches their breaking point, you have those moments of high drama and intensity that are catnip to writers!Q: What characteristic or personality trait does Tessa possess that you most admire? A: She is extremely persistent and unwilling to give up. When she's imprisoned, she doesn't stop trying to escape; she never stops trying learn new information; she never stops looking for her brother. She never fades quietly into the background; she plants her feet and asks questions--and gets answers, often from the unlikeliest of sources.Q: How much research did you do for Clockwork Angel? What was the most interesting thing that you learned?A: Starting in January of 2009 I took a six-month period of reading only books written during, or set in, the Victorian era--both fiction and nonfiction. I have an entire bookshelf now dedicated just to Victoriana. I also hired a research assistant who dug through primary source materials to find me letters and diaries written at the time. I was especially keen to find diaries of Americans traveling abroad, since Tessa is an American in London. I wanted to get a sense of what her impression as a foreigner would have been. One of the creepiest things I learned about was Victorian death photos, where they would prop up corpses to seem alive and take photos of them for their loved ones to have as keepsakes.Q: Which type of character is the most fun for you to write--the hero or the villain? A: There's a huge appeal to writing both, but there's something special about creating a really good villain. The villain stands outside society. He or she can say or do anything without fear of what the consequences will be for his/her relationships with the other characters. Sometimes the villain is the only one who can speak a vicious or painful truth and get away with it.

5 out of 5 stars Another strong beginning

When Tessa Gray arrives in London on a ship from New York, she's eager to see her brother, Nate. But before she can find him, she's intercepted by two women, known as the Dark Sisters, who kidnap her and force her to learn how to use the strange magical powers she never knew she had, all the while promising her that she is lucky, and she will soon meet the sinister Magister. Terrified and confused, Tessa is rescued by two young Shadowhunters, Will and Jem, and is taken to the London Institute, where she learns that her powers are just the beginning of a strange, magical world she never knew existed, full of wonder, but also full of hate, prejudice, and danger...and Tessa is in the center of it.

Clockwork Angel, the first in Cassandra Clare's new Infernal Devices trilogy, is a descriptive and elaborate book and a strong start to what is sure to be another knock-out trilogy. It takes about thirty pages or so before the book, which is set in the Victorian era, to reach familiar ground readers might be looking for, but once it does, the book unfolds quickly and smoothly. The times dictate that the mannerisms are a bit more refined in the characters, but Clare manages to sneak in plenty of humor and fun alongside the darker and riskier action scenes. There are a plethora of excellent new characters readers are introduced to, and each one is very realistic, and many have their secrets and mysteries--for Tessa, it is her heritage, and Will and Jem both have hazy backgrounds that are bound to become bigger issues later on.

One conflict that Clare portrays quite well was the struggle for the women Shadowhunters to be proper young ladies and women that society demands while balancing the Shadowhunters' need for strong fighters. Two characters, Jessamine and Charlotte, while on opposite ends of the controversy, both have to deal with it in their own way, and it's an issue that sets Clockwork Angel apart from Clare's previous work while at the same time making the setting more believable.

The idea of a clockwork army is brilliant, and the forethought and plotting that went into the book is impressive. There are plenty of intriguing mysteries and labyrinthine twists toward the end that will leave the reader far from where they were at the beginning of the book. Clare's talent for writing well-developed and entertaining characters and her fearlessness when it comes to creating dramatic, complicated conclusions to her books will garner Clockwork Angel plenty of attention and will leave readers impatient for the sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty damn good.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare is an really good read.I stayed up until 2 am on the day I bought it because I was totally sucked in. The setting of Victorian London is really atmospheric and well written, for anyone who loved the mortal instruments but doesnt read books set in this era, dont worry. It's really great.

In regards to the characters in this book, I was both dissappointed and relieved. They are all VERY similar to those in the mortal instruments trilogy. Will is Jace with brown hair, Jem is kind of a straight Alec and Jessamine is isabel, and then there is Nate who is basically sebastian but without demon blood. I actally liked Tessa more than I did Clary, she was really likeable and felt more real to me. I am glad in some ways that the author stuck to a formula of characters that definately worked for her with mortal instruments, but also I just felt a little cheated. I loved the mortal insturments characters so much I dont have much love left over for characters that are so damn similar.

The clockwork monsters we're really quite scary, certainly far more frightening than their creator and master who I was really disappointed in. Magnus Bane is as always totally fabulous and I really love the witty banter between the two main characters. Tessa's humour is dry and clever, very funny. There is a joke in there about a seven fingered dwarf named Nigel that cracked me up like there is no tomorrow.

All in all I would absolutely, one-hundred-percent recommend this book to people who enjoyed the mortal instruments trilogy or the fantasy YA genre, for me it just wasnt as good as the earlier books, though to be fair, that is an exceedingly tall order.

5 out of 5 stars Instantly rejuvenated my love for YA urban fantasy!

The Clockwork Angel instantly rejuvenated my love for YA urban fantasy. The dark, edgy quality of the writing and plot was breathtaking. Cassandra has a way of creating a world that starts to creep into your self conscious and devours your thoughts. At first, I was a bit skeptical, I didn't think this prequel would live up to the actual Mortal Instruments series. But, I was ecstatic to find out that I was beyond wrong. The characters and overall story was creative and compelling. The Victorian era was the perfect scenario with a refreshing outlook of people's mannerisms in the past. Tessa, one of my favorite characters, was a very unique individual who had the power to shift into another person. Her ability was wanted by powerful figures who managed to shake up her existence.

The moment Tessa entered the institute, I was taken back to the Mortal Instruments. I enjoyed seeing this place in a different light with assorted shadowhunters. Now, this wouldn't be a Cassandra Clare book without some drool worthy boys. The badass and cocky Shadowhunter was Will. His appearance of blue eyes and dark hair made me swoon at his every word. However, he did have moments where I would have loved to punch him. Of course we also need a nice, sensitive, good-looking boy to balance Will, and luckily I found that in Jem. He was such a sweetheart and knew just the right things to say to Will and Tessa. I felt like his name should of been 'Gem' because in my opinion, his pure heart was a rare treasure.

Also, I want to randomly point out that I love how Cassandra introduces Asian characters. I found that in Simon in the Mortal Instruments and now with Jem being half Asian. She definitely knows how to fulfill my Asian fetish in men. :) Okay then, I don't want to give too much away, because this was a book I want everyone to experience, especially Cassandra Clare fans! It had everything from amazing fighting scenes to dramatic twists and turns. The ending left me utterly speechless and I am officially hooked and cannot wait to continue on with this masterpiece of a series!

5 out of 5 stars I wish that I didn't have to wait for the sequel!
1 person found this review helpful.
Clockwork Angel book 1 in the Infernal Devices series is Cassandra Clare's (author of the Mortal Instruments Series- City of Bones) latest novel and I totally loved it!

This book is a prequel/companion to the Mortal Instrument series (which I have also read-and really enjoyed), but you don't have to read those books to enjoy this one.

Clockwork Angel takes place in the late 1800's in London -which Clare describes in beautiful detail- and follows a teenage girl named Tessa, an American orphan, who travels from New York to live in London with her brother Nate. But, when Tessa arrives in London instead of finding her brother, Tessa is taken prisoner by the Dark Sisters who claim to have her brother in captivity as well. Tessa does not start this book out as a fighter, and before arriving to London she knows nothing of Shadowhunters or Downworlders (Warlocks, Vampires, Werewolves...) but after fleeing the Dark Sisters she begins working with the Shadowhunters to help find her brother, and here she learns not only all about Downworlders and the Shadowhunter world, but she meets Jem and Will, two best friends who are not only night and day in their appearance, but in their personality as well and of course they both seem to like Tessa :)

When I first began reading this book I kept comparing it to Clare's Mortal Instrument Series, because (for those of you who have read that series) the books have quite a few similarities, I thought they followed a similar structure, Clare's style of writing hasn't changed much -though I will say it has improved, and Will reminded me a lot of Jace, (but I didn't mind at all because I totally loved Jace!!!) and Will was one of my favorite characters in this book. Will was hard on the outside but soft hearted, gorgeous and full of smart-ass remarks, and I thought that Clare was able to create a lot of tension and chemistry between Tessa and Will, and even Jem at times which for me was one of my favorite aspects of the book... I always love the love story aspects of books and I thought this one was really well done. I totally found myself falling in love with Will right along with Tessa.

I also really loved the setting of this book, I loved that it was in London, and I loved the time period. The entire time I was reading I felt as if I was in another place. But, at the same time I didn't think she went overboard with descriptions, which I think she has the tendency to do. In fact, I read a lot of the negative reviews for City of Bones and I feel like a lot of the things that Clare was criticized for in those books she didn't do in this book -the character's were more consistent and developed, the dialogue was more believable, there was more romance, and the explanation of things relating to Shadowhunter's was more naturally woven in.

I wish I could be more critical of this book, because I know that when I read reviews that all sunshine and rainbows I tend to want to dismiss them, but I honestly just enjoyed this book, it was a fun engaging read. It had all of the elements that I love in a book, urban-fantasy, romance, mystery, suspense, interesting characters -I do wish she had put a little more of Magnus Bane, who was from Mortal Instruments in, but I still enjoyed his cameo, even though it was short.

I wish I could say that everyone would love this book, because I liked it so much, but I think my honest opinion is that people who didn't like Mortal Instruments probably won't like this book, since it similar in style... but I would venture to say that most Mortal Instruments fans will like this book!!!

3 out of 5 stars Loved Mortal Instruments, this not so much...
3 people found this review helpful.
I have to say I had high hopes for this book considering how much I absolutely love The Mortal Instruments. I found this book to be very slow moving until near the end where all the main action and important plot info was crammed into the last several chapters. There was an interesting twist at the end which I have to say I never suspected. There was no romance to speak of, and what there was of the romantic tension between Will and Tessa was disappointing. Then, we are left hanging at the end of the book having to wait for the next book to find out about Tessa's parentage and why Will is such an ass. The book ends with lots of unresolved issues. There are obvious relations to characters in the Mortal Instruments, but this book takes place so much earlier, that I am confused as to what those relationships are. Overall, I was pretty diappointed in this one.

3 out of 5 stars Shadowhunters of London
3 people found this review helpful.
Fanfic-writer-turned-pro Cassandra Clare spun up an urban-fantasy trilogy all about the Shadowhunters, supernatural warriors fighting against evil demons. And she provides a solid if flawed prequel to that trilogy in "The Clockwork Angel" -- lots of steampunk automatons, flashy action and romance, but the heroine feels like a bland copy of Jane Eyre.

Tessa Gray came to London to live with her older brother Nathaniel, but instead she was taken prisoner by the malevolent Dark Sisters, who force her to "Change" every day. Then a boy named Will -- one of the Nephilim -- rescues her in an explosive battle with the sisters weird, and whisks her away to the London Institute, where the Shadowhunters coordinate their battles against demonic forces.

Her only hope to find her brother lies in helping the Institute, so Tessa reluctantly joins them in finding the man called The Magister, who apparently rules over all occult happenings in London. Her shape-changing powers are esesential to their plans, but they won't be enough to keep an automaton army from taking over London...

For the record, there IS a clockwork angel in this book, but it isn't really important here. I'm not sure why Clare didn't call this book "The Clockwork Soldiers" -- it's a better representation of what this book contains. Lots of steampunk horrors, magic angel swords, and frequent descriptions of the pretty teenage boys.

Clare's writing is detailed and fairly atmospheric. The beginning of the book is rather cheesy ("Whispers that run through Downworld like a river of black poison") and the action scenes tend to be flashy and over-the-top. But she has a knack for atmosphere, detailed descriptions and some tongue-in-cheek humor from Will ("There was a time I thought I was a ferret, but that turned out to be the opium haze").

Unfortunately, writing Victorian girls is the weakest part of Clare's story. Tessa is a prissy girl who feels like a pallid copy of Jane Eyre, and the constant drumming that she is SUPER-SPECIAL AND UNIQUE leaves her feeling vaguely Mary-Suish. She becomes more interesting in the last few chapters, but that was too late to make me like her.

The supporting characters are far more interesting -- Will is a quirky, quipping warrior-boy who uses lies to cover up his apparently dark past, and Jem is his smarter, more tragic counterpart. Clare also introduces us to an absent-minded inventor, a strong warrior-woman, and a scarred maid. The downside: Jessamine, the "conventional" Victorian girl who is demonized as a selfish brat... but is still more 3-D than Tessa.

"The Clockwork Angel" has some flaws, particularly in its flat heroine, but the last few chapters leave us with plenty of promise for the next two volumes of the Infernal Devices trilogy.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not nearly as good as Mortal Instruments.
2 people found this review helpful.
Clare's Mortal Instruments is my favorite of all the various urban fantasy series I have read (both YA and adult). I started Clockwork Angel today with great anticipation. I'm now half way through and am taking a break to write this to comment that while this is well worth a read for anyone who loves the world Clare has created, this prequel is not nearly as powerful as the first three Mortal Instruments books. There is much less action, little suspense, not much utilization of the magical elements of this world, and most importantly, the characters are less compelling. Perhaps things will pick up and deserve four stars, and even if they don't it is still a good read, but don't expect a story as compelling as her earlier work. I certainly hope her future work returns to her previos quality. She's still - for now - my faviorite author in this genera.

5 out of 5 stars Cassandra Clare did not disappoint!!
I am a fan of the Mortal Instruments series, so I had to get this book, and I'm glad I did! I had this book read in about 2 days. It kept my interest from beginning to end and I could not put it down. I can't wait for the next book in the Infernal Devices series and Mortal Instruments to come out. Cassandra Clare is one of my favorite writers and her books haven't disappointed me yet. I would highly recommend her books to any adult or teen.

4 out of 5 stars Cassandra Clare most definitely does not disappoint...
I've read The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare and eagerly picked up Clockwork Angel. I admit, I was a little apprehensive at first--I didn't know if the prequels would match up to the Mortal Instruments series. Fortunately, I was proved wrong. Clockwork Angel not only matched up to The Mortal Instruments Series, it has, by the slimmest of margins, surpassed it.

The plot seemed intriguing enough: Tessa goes to London to live with her brother when the "Dark sisters" capture her and teach her how to use and hone her ability: shape-shifting. Soon after, she is rescued by Will and taking to the Institute of shadowhunters--Nephilim who have a truce with the Downworlders and hunt demons. Reluctant, she agrees to stay if they help her find Nate. But soon, finding Nate turns into a deadly game...especially when the Magister seems to always be a step ahead of them.

**This review contains SPOILERS**

It would very loosely fit into the adventure or fantasy genre, although there is a bit of romance but not so much that it is the most prominent feature of this book. From the beginning, I was enthralled in this world--the Victorian era and London setting captivated me, more so than the modern setting in The Mortal Instruments.

Cassandra Clare has certainly developed as a writer, as this book was notably easier to read with fewer mistakes than City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass. The setting was fantastic, there was a great cast of characters--there had to be one you could identify with--, and a cliffhanger that will make you want more.

The book, however, was lacking in a few areas. Sometimes you wonder why Tessa makes the decisions she does, because some of them do seem a bit vapid or stupid. The ending with who was being the Magister didn't really surprise me, but Nate being apart of it did. So, for me, the ending was balanced out. That said, I much prefer this cast of characters to those in The Mortal Instruments. While Clary was weak and whiny, Tessa feels more courageous and brave, if not a little stubborn. Jem is really...a gem, there really is no comparison between him and Simon because he is the superior character. Will and Jace are about equal, in my opinion.

Overall, if I had to criticize anything, it would be Ms. Clare's recycled character traits and lack of romantic tension throughout the novel. While not identical, Jace and Will had very, very similar personalities. Jessie and Isabelle could be compared because they aren't the "softest" people, but what worked for Isabelle made Jessie seem like a spoiled brat (which she was). I wished that Ms. Clare would've changed it a bit this time around. Regarding the romantic tension, it is pretty clear that both boys are attracted to Tessa, but the romance has such a little part in this novel it's not really believable. But it was a great start to hopefully another enjoyable trilogy.

Final Grade: A-/A
4 out of 5 stars.

Other recommended books: The Mortal Instruments, The Hunger Games, The Gemma Doyle Trilogy, and the Harry Potter series.
